Figurative Language

| Simile | Definition: Comparing two unlike things using the words LIKE or AS Example: “She swims like a fish” Notice we are comparing two things, the girl to a fish, and we are using the word like. |
| Metaphor | Definition: Comparing 2 things, usually stating one thing is another. Example: “The classroom was a zoo!” Notice how we are comparing 2 things, saying that one is another. |
| Idiom | Definition: A word or phrase which has a literal meaning that is different from its figurative meaning. Example: “It’s raining cats and dogs outside!” |
| Hyperbole | Definition: A claim that is overly or extremely exaggerated. Example: “I have a million things to do today!” |

| Symbolism | Definition: the use of any person, situation, or object to represent an idea of some sort Example: Butterfly = transformation Lion = royalty, strength Swan = grace Owl = knowledge, wisdom |
| Allusion | Definition: When a book alludes to (or references) another book, movie, TV show, song, etc. Example: “If it doesn’t stop raining, I’m going to build an arc!” This is alluding to the story of Noah’s Arc. |
