| Abandonment | the act of leaving someone or something |
| Abdominal Thrust | Place your arms around their waist and bend them forward. Clench 1 fist and place it right above their belly button. Put the other hand on top of your fist and pull sharply inwards and upwards. Repeat this movement up to 5 times. |
| Abductor Wedge | used to separate the legs of a patient; commonly used after hip surgery, to keep the hip from popping out |
| Abnormal Vital Signs | pulse less than 60 or higher than 100, temp. less than 95 or higher than 99.6, respirations lower than 12 or higher than 20, oxygen level lower than 95 |
| Absorption | nutrients taken from the digestive system and put into blood |
| Abuse | interactions causing physical, sexual, or emotional harm to an individual |
| Accidents | an unexpected bodily event |
| Accountable | be responsible for your actions and give reasoning for it |
| Activities | |
| Acute | typically related to the resident’s rehabilitation process, an infection, or an injury. |
| Adaptive | a change in function to meet new conditions |
| Adaptive Devices | make navigation and completion of tasks for those with mobility, vision, or hearing impairment |
| Adaptive Equipment | used to simplify caregiving or make a safer environment for the ill, disabled, or elderly |
| Adduction | movement of a limb toward the midline |
| ADL's | hygiene, grooming, dressing, fluid and nutritional intake, mobility and elimination needs |
| Alzheimers (AD) | most common type of dementia; declining function of the brain over time |
| Ambulation | walking |
| Amputees | removal of a limb |
| Anatomy | structure of a plant, animal, or human |
| Anemia | low red blood cells |
| Angina | chest pain, related to a heart attack, pain down the right arm |
| Anterior | "in front of" |
| Anti-Embolitic Stocking | "compression stocking," reduce the risk of developing blood clots |
| Antibiotics | treats infection caused by bacteria |
| Anxiety | feeling of apprehension, uneasiness, uncertainty, or dread resulting from a real or perceived threat |
| Aphasia | difficulty processing what others are saying, caused by dementia, brain injuries, or strokes |
| Apical | highest point of a shape or object |
| Apnea | stop breathing when you are asleep, almost no air flow |
| Arthritis | inflammation or swelling of joints |
| Aspiration | breathing in a foreign object |
| Assault | attempted battery |
| Assistive Device | Devices such as gait belts and walkers that are used when moving a patient |
| Atrophy | decrease in size of something |
| Audiologist | health care professionals who work with disorders of hearing, balance and other neural systems |
| Authorized Duty | to use care towards others that would be exercised by an ordinarily reasonable and prudent person in order to protect them from unnecessary risk of harm in a typical medical lawsuit |
| Axillary Temperature | armpit temperature, can be one degree lower then oral |
| Bacteria | group of single cell microorganisms |
| Basic Needs | air, water, food, sleep, sex |
| Bath Water Temperature | 98-100F |
| Bathing | a partial bath, shower, tub bath, or full bed bath |
| Bed Cradle | a framework of metal strips or other material that forms a cage over an injured part of the body of a patient lying in bed, to protect it from the pressure of the bedclothes |
| Bed Height | lower when you leave the room, it goes from 21-29 inches |
| Bed Making | he technique of preparing different types of bed making patients / clients comfortable in his/ her suitable position for a particular condition |
| Bed Position | change every 2 hours |
| Bedrails | used to prevent falling, can be called a restraint |
| Bedrest | a prolonged rest in bed, as in the treatment of an illness |
| Behavior | actions or reactions |
| Behavioral Care Plan | a resident centered, plain-language plan developed for specific behaviors |
| Beliefs | how a person sees the world and themselves |
| Biohazard | substances that pose a threat to the health of an organism |
| Bipolar Disorder | shifts in mood from abnormal highs to abnormal lows, can change persons function or sociality |
| Bladder Training | to increase the time between emptying your bladder, increasing the amount of fluids your bladder can hold |
| Bleeding | hemorrhage |
| Blindness | visual impairment |
| Blood Pressure | force of blood on the walls of the arteries; systolic is the highest on the heart beat, diastolic is the lowest between the heartbeats |
| Body Alignment | Good posture principles that prevent musculoskeletal injuries |
| Body Fluid | liquids within the body of an organism |
| Body Language | nonverbal communication |
| Body Mechanics | the way we move to go about our daily lives |
| Body Temperature | 97.7-99.5F is the normal range |
| Bone Loss | osteoporosis |
| Bowel Program | a plan to retrain your body to have regular bowel movements |
| Brain Stem | connects the cerebrum of the brain to the spinal cord and cerebellum |
| Breathing | inhalation and exhalation |
| Brittle Bones | Osteogenesis imperfecta |
| Burnout | syndrome from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed |
| Burns | cool the burn, don't break blisters |
| Call Light | in reach of resident every time you leave the room/bedside |
| Cancer | a disease in which some of the body's cells grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts of the body |
| Cardiac Arrest | when the heart stops beating suddenly |
| Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation | repeated compression of a patient's chest, performed in an attempt to restore the blood circulation and breathing of a person who has suffered cardiac arrest |
| Cardiovascular System | consists of the heart, arteries, veins, and capillaries. The heart and vessels work together intricately to provide adequate blood flow to all parts of the body |
| Care Impaired | When a person has trouble remembering, learning new things, concentrating, or making decisions that affect their everyday life |
| Care Plan | summarize a person's health conditions, specific care needs, and current treatments |
| Care Planning | The care plan should outline what needs to be done to manage the care needs. It can help organize and prioritize caregiving activities |
| Cast | A protective shell of fiberglass, plastic, or plaster, and bandage that is molded to protect broken or fractured limb(s) as it heals |
| Cataract | a cloudy area in the lens of your eye |
| Catheter | flexible tube inserted through a narrow opening into a body cavity |
| CC's in an Ounce | 30CC=1OZ=30mL |
| Central Nervous System | the brain and spinal cord |
| Chain of Command | a ladder of authority where those in charge of an organization or company direct and control employees below them |
| Charge Nurse | a registered nurse (RN) who leads a nursing unit during a shift or specific period |
| Chemical Disinfection | a process that reduces the number of microorganisms present to a level at which they do not present a risk |
| Chemical Restraint | a form of medical restraint in which a drug is used to restrict the freedom or movement of a patient or in some cases to sedate the patient |
| Chemotherapy | a drug treatment that uses powerful chemicals to kill fast-growing cells in your body |
| Choking | food, a toy, or other object is blocking the throat or windpipe (airway) |
| Chronic | long time |
| Circulation | the flow of blood through the heart and blood vessels, and the flow of lymph through the lymph vessels |
| Circulatory System | delivers oxygen and nutrients to cells and takes away wastes |
| Cleaning | to rid of dirt or impurities. |
| Cleaning Pills | promote healthy digestion, vitality, and overall health (detox) |
| Clear Liquid Diet | liquid you can see through |
| Clergy | a body of ordained ministers in a Christian church |
| Cognitively Impaired | Problems with a person's ability to think, learn, remember, use judgement, and make decisions |

| Combative Resident | Residents, especially those with dementia, may at times become agitated and combative |
| Communicable | capable of being transmitted from person to person, animal to animal, animal to human, or human to animal |
| Communication | the sending and receiving of information |
| Competency Evaluation | evaluates the nurse's ability to apply knowledge and skills effectively to a specific practice setting |
| Conduct | antisocial behavior? |
| Confidentiality | keeping or being kept secret or private |
| Conflict | serious disagreement or argument |
| Conflict Resolution | the process of ending a dispute and reaching an agreement that satisfies all parties involved |
| Confused Resident | notify the nurse, get attention and introduce yourself, give simple explanations, redirect resident |
| Congestive Heart Failure | a long-term condition in which your heart can't pump blood well enough to meet your body's needs |
| Constipation | a problem with passing stool |
| Constrict | is the narrowing (constriction) of blood vessels by small muscles in their walls |
| Contamination | the action or state of making or being made impure by polluting or poisoning |
| Contracture | shortening and hardening of muscles, tendons, or other tissue |
| Converting Measures | 1oz=30mL=30cc |
| COPD | Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, a common lung disease causing restricted airflow and breathing problems |

| Defense Mechanism | an unconscious psychological operation that functions to protect a person from stressors |
| Dehydration | not consuming enough water or losing more then your input |
| Delegation | distributing work |
| Demanding Resident | accuses us of not caring about her and not helping her enough |
| Dementia | the loss of cognitive functioning — thinking, remembering, and reasoning — to such an extent that it interferes with a person's daily life and activities |
| Dentures | removable oral appliances that replace missing teeth |
| Dependability | the quality of being trustworthy and reliable |
| Depression | a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest |
| Developmental Disability | a group of conditions due to an impairment in physical, learning, language, or behavior areas |
| Diabetes | your body doesn't make enough insulin or can't use it as well as it should |
| Dialysis | a procedure to remove waste products and excess fluid from the blood when the kidneys stop working properly |
| Diaphragm | a dome-shaped muscular partition separating the thorax from the abdomen in mammals. It plays a major role in breathing, as its contraction increases the volume of the thorax and so inflates the lungs |
| Diastolic | pressure in your arteries when your heart rests between beats |
| Diet | the food and drink that a person, animal, or group usually takes |
| Dietitian | health professionals who are experts in nutrition and the human diet |
| Digestion | converts the foods we eat into their simplest forms, like glucose (sugars), amino acids (that make up protein) or fatty acids (that make up fats) |
| Dilate | make or become wider, larger, or more open |
| Dirty Linen | goes in hamper |
| Discharging Resident | the licensee shall give the resident or legal representative a 30 day written advance notice |
| Disease | illness or sickness characterised by specific signs or symptoms |
| Disease Process | transmissibility, incubation period distribution and infectious period distribution |
| Disinfection | involves the destruction of microorganisms, but not usually spores, on inanimate surfaces or objects |
| Disoriented | having lost one's sense of direction |
| Disposing of Contaminated Materials | send them to a hazardous waste facility that can also handle infectious waste (in a red bag/bin/container/storage) |
| Disrespect | lack of respect |
| Dizziness | a term used to describe a range of sensations, such as feeling faint, woozy, weak or unsteady |
| DNR | do-not-resuscitate (DNR) order is a legal document that means a person has decided not to have cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) attempted on them if their heart or breathing stops |
| Documentation | is any communicable material that is used to describe, explain or instruct regarding some attributes of an object, system or procedure, such as its parts, assembly, installation, maintenance, and use |
