Term | Definition |

Population | the entire group of interest; samples are drawn from populations |
Random Sample | a sample in which every element in the population has an equal chance of being selected |
Sample | a part of a population |
Data | a set of collected information; often numerical information such as a list of measurements |
Box Plot | a visual display of a data set on a number line that shows the minimum, the lower quartile, the median, the upper quartile, and the maximum |
Mean | the sum of a set of values divided by the number of values |
Median | the middle number, or the halfway point between the two middle numbers, in an ordered set of values |
Infer | to conclude or decide something based on evidence |
Range | the difference between the greatest value (maximum) and the least value (minimum) in a data set |
IQR | the difference between the upper quartile and the lower quartile |
MAD | the sum of the distances of each data point from the mean of the data set divided by the number of data points. It has always been positive. |
Variability | how spread out or close together values in a data set are |
Measure of Center | a single number that summarizes what is a typical for all the values in a data set. Mean and median are measures of center. |
Measure of Variability | a single number that summarizes how much the values in a data set vary . MAD and IQR are measures of variability. |
