| Field of View | The amount of space you can see under a microscope |
| Wet Mount | A slide with a cover slip held down by a liquid |
| Organism | Living thing made of cell(s) ** single or multicellular organisms ** |
| Cells | Microscopic, most basic unit of living things They have boundaries and structures inside |
| Metabolism | The breakdown of food for energy |
| Cytoplasm | The liquid that fills the inside of the cell |
| System | Group of smaller parts that interact to perform a function |
| Input | Something that is put INTO a system |
| Output | End result of something produced by a system |
| Mechanical Digestion | The physical breakdown of our food into smaller pieces. |
| Chemical Digestion | Food is chemically changed into a new substance. Ex. Starch into sugar in the mouth |
| Enzymes | Chemical that helps to digest food **speeds up chemical reaction (ex amylase, pepsin, bile) |
| Starch | Complex carbohydrate **chemical digestion begins in mouth |
| Stomach | Organ in the body that mechanically digests all foods and chemically digests proteins |
| Protein | Component of our food that gives us building materials, chemically digested in stomach |
| Fat | Component of food - provides energy (stored), chemically digested in small intestine |
| Bile | Acid produced by liver - dissolves fat into tiny droplets |
| Small Intestine | Organ that chemically breaks down fats and absorbs food molecules |
| Absorption | Substance gets taken in by something else |
| Surface Area | Sum of all the faces of an object - outermost layer |
| Cell Membrane | Semi-permeable boundary; separates cell from its environment **Controls what enters and leaves the cell** |
| Diffusion | Movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to low concentration |
| Osmosis | Movement of water molecules across cell membrane: area of high concentration to low concentration |
| Plasma | Liquid portion of the blood that carries water and glucose |
| Capillaries | Very small arteries and veins where the exchange of important nutrients and waste occur between blood and cells |
