Heat
vocab 7
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Chemical potential energy | The energy stored in the chemical bonds of a substance |
| Endothermic process | Heat is absorbed from the surroundings. The system gains heat as surroundings lose heat. (Positive sign, feels cold) |
| Enthalpy | Accounts for the heat flow of the system at constant pressure |
| Exothermic process | Heat is released to its surroundings. The system loses heat as surroundings gain heat. (Negative signs, feel hot) |
| Heat | Energy that transfers from one object to another because of a temperature difference between the objects |
| Law of conservation of energy | States that in any chemical or physical process, energy is neither created or destroyed |
| Molar heat of fusion | The heat absorbed by one mole of solid substance as it melts to a liquid at a constant temperature |
| Molar heat of vaporization | The amount of heat required to vaporize one mole of a given liquid at a constant temperature |
| Specific heat | The amount of heat it takes to raise the temperature of 1g of the substance at 1 degree C |
| Standard Heat of Formation | The change in enthalpy that accompanies the formation of one mole of a compound from its elements with all substances in their standard states |
| Activated Complex | An unstable arrangement of atoms that forms for a moment at the peak of the activation energy barrier |
| Activation Energy | The minimum energy that colliding particles must have in order to react. |
| Catalyst | A substance that speeds up the reaction but is not used up in the reaction. Lowers the activation energy of a reaction, allowing the reaction to occur faster, does not change the energy of the reactants or products |
