How can you identify when building materials contain asbestos? Taking a bulk sample and examining it with a Polarized Light Microscope (PLM) in an approved lab.
What are the federal agencies that have established norms and rules for the management of asbestos? EPA, OSHA, NIOSH, DOT.
Which agencies sets health and safety standards for workers? OSHA, Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

How much asbestos does it take to get a disease? There is no safe amount, but the more asbestos you breathe in, the greater the chance of asbestosis.
Small hairs in the windpipe that help expel asbestos fibers are called? Cilia.
What is the disease related to asbestos exposure, which multiplies the chances of contacting if the person also smokes cigarettes? Lung Cancer.
What does the synergistic effect refer to? Effect caused by two or more agents. making an effect greater than that caused by only one.

For how long do employers keep workers' medical records? 30 years plus duration of employment.

How often is a qualitative or quantitative fit test needed? By when the face mask is assigned and every year thereafter.
According to NIOSH research, which respirator provides the best protection for asbestos workers? Type C supply air, pressure demand.
When should PAPR powered air purifying mask be used or provided in accordance with OSHA 29CFR 1926? 1101 (h) (3)? When the level of fibers in the air requires it, and when workers ask for it.
How often is a respirator inspected and cleaned? Before and after each use.
What are the two groups of respirators? Air purifying respirators and Air supplied respirators.
What is the maximum length allowed in supplies air respirator hoses? 300 feet long.
What is the OSHA code for respiratory protection? 29 CFR 1910. 134
What does the protection factor (PF) in respirators tell us? The quality that the respirator provides.
What is the use of knowing what the MUL of a respirator is? To know the maximum legal use level of a respirator.
Who should use a respirator and protective clothing in the work area? Everyone regardless of the time spent in the regulated area I, II, or III class of work or the activity that is developed.
Do EPA or OSHA require building owners to renovate asbestos from their buildings? No. If the ACM is in good condition and no remodeling or demolition work is being done.
Define the ENCAPSULATION jobs. It is the spraying of a paint-like layer on the material, which is applied with a low-pressure spray system. When the material is encapsulated, the layer prevents the release of fibers into the air and contact damage.
Define the works of ENCLOSURE. It means Building an airtight barrier around the asbestos containing material, as a wrap. Constructed of non-asbestos materials, such as drywall or drywall, wood, with grooved joints, caulked sheet metal, and other materials.
Define repair in ACM. It is a control method that can be used when the asbestos containing materials have not suffered as much damage. Like if the asbestos pile insulation has a torn canvas covering, the asbestos fibers will be exposed and could be released into the air.

What are the three basic rules for keeping asbestos out of the air? Keep asbestos wet, enclose work area, filter air with HEPA filters, negative pressure, immediate clean up, and dispose of waste according to law.
Who is the "competent person" on the job sites? The supervisor. Which must be present at all times during work.
Where are the warning signs posted according to OSHA? All access areas to the regulated area.
What is the HVAC procedure for when starting an asbestos abatement project? The system is shut down, the control box is tagged and padlocked, the air vents within the area are sealed with plastic.
To avoid electric shock, what is the procedure with the electricity of the work area? It is disconnected at the main electrical panel; the lock and tag system are used.
What is recommended with extension cords that go into the work area? It is recommended to elevate or tape them to the wall above the plastics.
Why is it recommended to pass the scaffolding first before placing the plastics of the critical barriers and building a decontamination unit? To avoid damaging critical barrier plastics.
What is the minimum number of rooms required in a decontamination unit? Minimum 3 chambers. Clean, shower, and equipment.
Where should workers wear respirators when entering the work area? In the clean room.
Where are pressure machines located, in relation to the decontamination unit? The area furthest away possible from the decontamination unit.
EPA recommends a complete air exchange in the asbestos abatement area every. Every 15 minutes.
How much negative air pressure is required within the work area? Minimum 0.02 of h2o.
Which agency gives approval for dry removal of the ACM? EPA.
What is the procedure for movable objects within the work area? Decontaminate in combination of wet methods and HEPA filter vacuums and remove from he work area.
How many layers of plastic and what gauge are attached to fixed objects? Minimum one layer of 6mil independent of the plastics of the wall or the floor.
Parts where "critical barriers" should be placed. Openings between the work area and clean areas, e,g, windows, doors, air conditioning vents etc.
The main reason for critical barriers is to. Prevent asbestos fibers from escaping and maintain negative pressure within area.
What is the order of the plastics and the gauges? Floor 6mil, wall 4mil, floor 6mil, wall 4mil.
How many minimum rooms are needed for the waste load out area or "bag out"? Minimum 2 rooms. independent to DECON.
What is the surfactant and water combination called? Amended water.
What happens when asbestos gets wet? It absorbs the water and begins to swell.
What is the exception for dry asbestos removal? When there is live electrical wires and there is a possibility of an electric shock.
In how many stages is asbestos removed from the ceilings and structural member? Two stages: Gross removal and final / secondary removal.
What should workers do with the water used to clean up an asbestos abatement project? Solidify it and put it in sealed containers for disposal in an asbestos landfill.
For disposal purposes, what category does the protective clothing used in the work area correspond to? Asbestos waste.
Where does the first removal begin, in relation to negative pressure machines? Always as far away from negative pressure machines, in the direction towards them.
During asbestos removal debris is cleaned up. All the time during complete removal.
Why should asbestos waste be double bagged before being removed from the work area? To provide additional protection against teras and punctures.

When is the final visual inspection carried out? After secondary removal.
When are the workers on an asbestos project required to go through a decontamination phase? Every time you leave the work area regardless of how long you have been inside.
Work areas should be mopped and cleaned after removing asbestos to. Pick up dust and invisible asbestos fibers.
What is tested with the "aggressive air sample"? Final air quality level 0.01 f/ cc
Who is authorized to collect final air clearance samples in schools? An air monitoring specialist independent of the abatement contractor.
A final Encapsulant or "lockdown" is. A substance that is sprayed onto a surface to minimize the release of asbestos fibers that remain after an asbestos removal.
When can negative air pressures machines be turned off? Until the final air quality level 0.01 f / cc is obtained.
What kinds of projects is the glove bag used for? Small, short-term projects that require a single application.
How can negative pressure be obtained in a mini enclosure? Using a HEPA filter vacuum.
What does the "automatic closing" regulation refer to in the event of negative air pressure failures? Have the decontamination unit "Z" pattern flaps close themselves if negative air pressure fails.
When wearing the respirator, do the straps go through? Under the hoods of protective suits.
Where should workers put their clothes on after leaving a work area? In the clean room.
Signs of heat exhausted include.. Cool skin, sweaty skin, pale skin, headache, and drowsiness.
Why do we need to pay attention to heat exhausted symptoms? Because it may be the beginning of heat stroke.
How can we prevent overheating problems in asbestos removal work? Drink enough fluids, avoid alcohol consumption, periodic breaks, get used to the heat gradually, pay attention to any physical changes in workers, avoid waterproof clothing.

How much protection do organic vapor filters give us against asbestos fibers? Fitters for organic vapors do not give us effective protection for asbestos fibers, combined fitters are required when working with organic vapors and asbestos fibers.

To avoid accidental falls on the job site, what is recommended with electrical cables? Tape them to the wall, avoid tripping or electrical shock, connected to GFCI.
Ways you can prevent electric shock in asbestos removal? Avoid metal tools, check: extensions and power tools, check that the area is de-energized and there is a lock and tag on the main box, use the GFCI, clean puddles of water.
What should you do if a co-worker receives an electric shock? Disconnect electrical cables, call for help, remove cables with a dry piece of wood.
Why do you have to take fire safety measures in asbestos removal work? Because we have the necessary elements to form the triangle of fire. Fuel, heat, and oxygen.
What kind of fire extinguisher is used in asbestos abatement projects? Class ABC, for paper, wood, chemical, and electrical fires.
What is the first thing a worker should do if there's a fire in the work area? Exit immediately in accordance with the evacuation plan.
How can you prevent a fire in an asbestos abatement project? It is important that fuels, heat, ad oxygen are kept separate to prevent a fire from occurring.
What is OSHA's regulation on extension ladders? Inspect before use, separate ladder 1" from wall for every 4" in height, three points of contact with ladder.
What material are ladders for asbestos abatement projects? Fiberglass, with the safety feet to prevent slipping or cutting the plastic on the floor.
What ground circuit interrupters are used as protection against. Electric shock.
What is the maximum height of scaffolds per OSHA law? No more than 4 times the height, compared to the base (width)
How can you prevent a ladder or scaffolding accident? Following OSHA recommendations.
Name ways we can trip, slip, or fall in a work area. Puddles of water, broken plastic, lack of lighting, hoses, tools, and asbestos debris.
How can you prevent slip and trip hazards? Keep the work area clean and organized.
When you go out the work area, what safety gear do you wear to the shower area? Just the respirator.
What should you do if there's a power outage and the negative pressure in the work area fails? Evacuate the area through the decontamination unit, evacuate persons occupying the building, and do not return until negative pressure is restored, and air samples are taken outside the area, and is determined that the building can be reoccupied.
What is the best way to control the escape of fibers from the work area? Negative pressure.
What is the definition of negative pressure? Negative pressure machines pull air into the area through the de-con, and out through the HEPA filters, drawing out more air than being introduced.
