Radioactivity comes from unstable nuclei, elements with atomic numbers 20 and higher , emit small particles of energy called radiation
alpha particle travel distance: 2 to 4 cm, shielding: paper, clothing, typical source: radium 226
beta particle 200 to 300 cm, shielding: heavy clothing, lab coats, gloves, typical source: carbon-14
gamma ray travel distance in air: 500m, shielding: lead, thick concrete, typical source technetium 99m
alpha particle tissue depth 0.05mm
beta particle tissue depth 4 to 5 mm
gamma ray particle tissue depth 50 cm or more
