Math 7- Unit 1
Intro to Math 7
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Counting Numbers | Natural, Positive Numbers {1,2,3,...} |
| Whole Numbers | Counting Numbers including 0. {0,1,2,3,...} |
| Integers | The set of counting numbers. They are positive, negative and 0. {...,-3,-2,-1,-,1,2,3,...} |
| Rational Numbers | Any number that can be written as a fraction. These can also be repeating and terminating decimals. |
| Irrational Numbers | These are non-repeating, non-terminating (doesn't end) decimals. Ex. Pi, rad 2, 32.1234... |
| Place Value | The spot in the before or after the decimal point. |
| Loss | Negative |
| Gain | Positive |
| Below Sea Level | Negative |
| Withdrawel | Negative- takeout |
| Profit | Positive- gain |
| Absolute Value | Distance away from 0 |
| Eliminate double signs | When subtracting a negative number, change to adding a psotive. |
| When multiplying an odd number of negative signs, what is your answer? | Negative |
| When multiplying an even number of negative signs, what us your answer? | Positive |
| Common Denominator | When we try to add/subtract fractions with different denominators, we must find a common "same" denominator to be able to add/subtract them. |
| Simplify | To put into smallest terms |
| Divide Fractions | Multiply by the reciprocal of the fraction. (flip it) |
| Reciprocal of 3 is? | 1/3 |
| Reciprocal of -4 is? | -1/4 |
| Reciprocal of 2/3 is? | 3/2 |
| Order of Operations (OOO) | Parenthesis Exponents Multiply/Divide (whichever comes first) Add/Subtract (whichever comes first) |
| Commutative Property of Add/Mult | The order of the numbers DON'T affect the sum or product |
| Associative Propeerty of Add/Mult | The way the numbers are paired DOESN'T affect the sum or product |
| Distributive Property | Multiplication can be distributed over addition or subtraction |
| Additive Identify | When 0 is added or subtracted from any number, the number remains unchanged. (keeps identity) |
| Additive Inverse (opposite) | The sum of any number and its additive inverse (opposite) is zero (the additive identity) "negate the number" |
| Multiplicative Identity | When any number is multiplied by 1 the number remains unchanged (keep its identity) |
| Multiplicative Inverse | The product of any number and its multiplicative inverse (its reciprocal) is 1. *0 has no multiplicative inverse* |
| Multiplication Property of 0/ Zero Product Property | The product of 0 and any number is 0. |
