Stair Recall

QuestionAnswer
What is the main purpose of a staircase? To provide safe access between different floor levels.
What is the purpose of a balustrade? To prevent people from falling and provide support while using the stairs
What is the maximum legal gap between stair spindles? 100 mm.
What is the typical pitch (angle) of a staircase? Usually between 30° and 38°, with a maximum of 42°.
What is the maximum permitted rise of a stair? 220 mm.
What is the minimum permitted going (tread depth)? 220 mm.
What is the difference between a rise and a going? The rise is the vertical height between treads, while the going is the horizontal depth of the tread.
What is a tread? The horizontal part of the stair that you step on.
What is a riser? The vertical board between each tread that supports the tread above.
What is the purpose of the bullnose on a tread? It projects over the riser and helps protect carpet edges from wear and damage.
What is the difference between a wall string and an outer string? A wall string is fixed against the wall and has no newel posts, whereas an outer string is supported by newel posts at the top and bottom.
What is the purpose of wedges in a staircase? To tighten the treads and risers securely into the housing joints.
What are glue blocks used for? They strengthen the joint between the tread and riser and help prevent squeaking.
What is draw boring? A traditional method of pulling mortise and tenon joints tightly together using offset peg holes.
What size is a typical newel post? Approximately 90 mm × 90 mm PSE.
What is the purpose of a half newel post? It is fixed to a wall on a landing and supports the handrail.
At what height should a domestic handrail normally be fitted? 900 mm above the floor or stair nosings.
What is the purpose of the groove underneath a handrail? To receive and secure the tops of the spindles.
What is the purpose of a spacer bar? To fill the groove between the spindles in the base rail or handrail.
Why is it important to calculate the total rise before constructing a staircase? To ensure each step has an equal rise and the staircase complies with Building Regulations.
