Science

QuestionAnswer
Sound Wave a longitudinal wave caused by vibrations and carried through a substance.
Medium a substance through which a wave can travel.
Tinnitus one of the most common types of hearing loss; results from long term exposure to loud sounds.
Pitch a measure of how high or low a sound is perceived to be, depending on the frequency of the sound wave
Fequency the number of crests or troughs that are made in a given time.
Ultrasonic sounds that have a frequency too high for people to hear.
Doppler effect the apparent change in the frequency of a sound caused by the motion of either the listener or the source of the sound.
Loudness the measure of how well a sound can be heard.
Amplitude the largest distance the particles in a wave vibrate from their rest postion.
Decibel the most common unit used to measure loudness (dB)
Reflection the bouncing back of a wave after it strikes a barrier.
Echo a reflected sound wave
Echolocation the use of reflected sound waves to find objects
Sonar a type of electronic echolaocation
Interference the combination of two or more waves that results in a single wave
Sonic Bond the explosive sound heard when a shock wave reaches your ear.
Standing Wave a pattern of vibration that simulates a wave that is standing still
Resonance happens when an object vibrating at or near a resonant frequency of a second object causes the second object to vibrate
Sound Quality the result of the blending of several pitches through interference.
Noise a sound that consists of a random mix of frequencies
