| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Sound Wave | a longitudinal wave caused by vibrations and carried through a substance. |
| Medium | a substance through which a wave can travel. |
| Tinnitus | one of the most common types of hearing loss; results from long term exposure to loud sounds. |
| Pitch | a measure of how high or low a sound is perceived to be, depending on the frequency of the sound wave |
| Fequency | the number of crests or troughs that are made in a given time. |
| Ultrasonic | sounds that have a frequency too high for people to hear. |
| Doppler effect | the apparent change in the frequency of a sound caused by the motion of either the listener or the source of the sound. |
| Loudness | the measure of how well a sound can be heard. |
| Amplitude | the largest distance the particles in a wave vibrate from their rest postion. |
| Decibel | the most common unit used to measure loudness (dB) |
| Reflection | the bouncing back of a wave after it strikes a barrier. |
| Echo | a reflected sound wave |
| Echolocation | the use of reflected sound waves to find objects |
| Sonar | a type of electronic echolaocation |
| Interference | the combination of two or more waves that results in a single wave |
| Sonic Bond | the explosive sound heard when a shock wave reaches your ear. |
| Standing Wave | a pattern of vibration that simulates a wave that is standing still |
| Resonance | happens when an object vibrating at or near a resonant frequency of a second object causes the second object to vibrate |
| Sound Quality | the result of the blending of several pitches through interference. |
| Noise | a sound that consists of a random mix of frequencies |
