Dynamic Earth

QuestionAnswer
A rock that is made out of sand, shells and other materials. It consists of layers and often has fossils found in them. Sedimentary
A rock that is made beneath the surface of the Earth. It has ribbon-like layers caused by heat. Some of these rocks have crystals on them. Metamorphic
A rock made from the cooling of lava. If the lava cools quickly, the rock looks smooth and shiny. If the lava cools slowly, the rock has plenty of texture. Igneous
A type of Igneous rock that has SMALL crystals on it. This is because the lava that forms the rock is cooled QUICKLY. Extrusive Igneous rock (such as Basalt)
A type of Igneous rock that has LARGE crystals on it. This is because the lava that forms the rock is cooled SLOWLY. Intrusive Igneous rock (such as Granite)
A compound containing a metal. These are found in the Earths crust. Metal ores
A metal ore containing the element iron. Haematite
These metals can be extracted from their ore by heating with carbon. Zinc, Iron, Lead and Copper
These metals can be extracted from their ore using electrolysis Potassium, Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium and Aluminium
These metals are known as Native metals. Gold and Silver
The use of electricity to split up compounds into elements (separate the metal from its ore). Electrolysis
Metals form _______________ ions. Positive
Non-metals form ________________ ions. Negative
Fossil fuels are made from decayed and fossilised remains of plants and animals that lived millions of years ago. Fossil fuels are a _____________ resource. Finite
The process by which crude oil is separated into its different, more useful, fractions. Fractional distillation.
A type of fossil fuel that was formed from sea organisms that died millions of years ago. They settled on the ocean floor and decomposed at various pressures with sand and salt. Crude oil
The products of the combustion of fossil fuels Carbon dioxide and water
Carbon dioxide is removed from our atmosphere using this process. Photosynthesis
Too much carbon dioxide in our atmosphere has resulted in _____________ _______________. Global warming
Two gases that contribute to acid rain Sulphur dioxide and Nitrogen Dioxide
This substance enters water systems and sinks into the ground. It can make water toxic to aquatic animals. It can also harm forests by damaging trees' leaves. Acid Rain
True or False? In a fractionating column, smaller molecules rise farther up the column than larger molecules before they condense back into a liquid. True
