Anaerobic The absence of oxygen
Aquatic Buffer An area next to a water body or wetland that is protected development.
Bog A wetland characterized by its spongy peat and acidic conditions
Fen A wetland that is similar to a bog but less acidic and higher in nutrients concentration due to flowing water.
Freshwater Marsh A wetland in which freshwater covers the ground for an extended period of time.
Freshwater Wetland A wetland found inland along lakes and ponds on the floodplains of rivers and streams and in a isolated low lying areas surrounded by dry land.
Hydric Soil A soil that is saturated for long enough period to develop anaerobic conditions.
Hydrophilic Having an affinity for water such as water loving plants
Marine Wetland A wetland with highly saline water that is found on coastlines
Muck An organic wetland soil formed with decomposed vegetation.
Peat An organic wetland soil created by partially decomposed organic material saturated with water.
Pyrophytic Ecosystem An ecosystem in which many of the plants have become fire adapted and may require fire to seed an bloom
Riparian Buffer A grassed or wooded area along side a waterway that provides habitat for wildlife and protection of the waterway from pollution and sediment.
Riparian Zone A strip of protected land located along water bodies and waterways that protect the water quality by preventing contamination from erosion and runoff
Saltwater Mash A coastal wetland that is regularly flooded by the oceans tides
Tidal Saltwater Marsh A coastal wetland that is regularly flooded by oceans tides also referred to saltwater mash
Swamp A forest wetland formed in low lying area that is constantly saturated with water.
Topography The surface configuration or features of a land area including the slope evaluation and orientation of the land.
Wetland An area where water covers soil or is present either at or near the surface of the soil al year or for varying periods during the year including the growing season.
