Text structures

Table of contents | At the beginning of a book that lists chapters and contents. It is in order that the book goes in |
Index | At the end of the book. It alphabetically lists all the major ideas,names, topics, and which page # to find them. Use when you need to go back and reread information in-depth. |
Glossary | At the end of the book. Lists key terms in alphabetical order, and gives definitions. Good to use for a quick reminder of a term, or when making flash cards |
Titles/Headings | This is at the top of a text. It is in some sort of special font, bigger and bolder. Maybe in a different color than all the other fonts. It tells what the reading will be about. |
Subheadings | Divides the reading into sections. In a special font that is bold or a different color to stand out from the main text. It is smaller than a header or title. |
Photos/Illustrations | This is a REAL LIFe or ARTISTIC representation of something to do with the text. It helps the reader picture what is going on and to understand the text better. |
Captions | This is the sentence under a photo or illustration. it tells the reader what the photo or illustration is about or what is happening in it. |
Maps/Timelines/Tables/Charts | These are features that show SCIENTIFIC, MATHEMATICAL, Or GEOGRAPHIC information. They come in many different forms, shapes, or sizes |
Sidebar | These have information thats adds to the main text. Usually on the side of the main text. It provides info that is interesting or helpful tot he reader to understand the main text more. |
