English Poetry Terms

TermDefinition
Quantrain 4 line stanza
Connotation ideas or feelings associated with the word or phrase. Start with positive or negative and get more specific
Rhyme the repetition of a final stressed vowel and succeeding sounds in two or more words
Internal Rhyme occurs within line of poetry
End Rhyme occurs at the end of lines
rhyme scheme the pattern formed by end rhymes. It is shown by a row of letters (a b a b) in which a different letter of the alphabet signals each new rhyme
alliteration the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words.
consonance the repetition of consonant sounds within the words or at the end of words.
assonance the repetition of vowel sounds within non-rhyming words.
line a horizontal row of words, which may or may not form a complete sentence
stanza a group of lines forming a unit and separated from the next stanza by a line of space
couplet two lines that rhyme
sestet 6 line stanza
octave 8 line stanza
Speaker the voice conveying the words with the readers of the poem
A speaker can be the voice of what? person, animal, thing, or object
allusion reference to a well-known piece of work (biblical, historical, mythological)
personification give an inanimate object human characteristics
hyperbole used for the emphasis; an exaggeration
imagery engages the five senses; picture words
simile comparing things using like or as
symbolism when one idea, person, or thing stands for something on a deeper level
metaphor a figure of speech that makes a comparison of two seemingly unlike things, and implies and underlying similarity. Does not use like or as.
tone the attitude or feeling that the speaker seems to have towards the word or topic
mood the attitude or feeling the reader gets towards the word or topic
dictation the author's or speaker's word/phrase choice; usually strong and stands out
denotation dictionary definition of the word/phrase
onomatopeia the use of a word or phrase that imitates or suggests the sound of what it describes
