Endocrine Hormones
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Ghrelin | Hormone secreted by empty stomach; sends "I'm hungry" signals to the brain |
| Releasing hormones (RH) | Stimulate the production and secretion of specific anterior pituitary hormones |
| Somatostatin (SS) | Hormone that inhibits release of growth hormone and insulin and many other hormones |
| Thyroxin (T4) | Thyroid hormone that increases cellular metabolism and affects body weight and body temperature |
| Calcitonin (CT) | Causes calcium from blood to be deposited on bone; causes a decrease in blood calcium concentration |
| Thymosin | Stimulates the maturation of white blood cells in the immune system |
| Epinephrine | Also called adrenaline. it increases heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar. it moves blood to the core of the body. |
| Aldosterone | Hormone that stimulates the kidney to retain sodium ions and water, which increases blood pressure |
| Cortisol | A stress hormone that releases sugars into the blood, helping to prepare the body to respond to a threat. it also stops the immune system from causing inflammation. |
| Erythropoietin (EPO) | Hormone secreted by the kidney to stimulate the production of red blood cells by bone marrow |
| Renin | Hormone secreted by the kidney; it raises blood pressure by causing narrowing of blood vessels |
| Estrogen | A sex hormone, secreted mostly by the ovaries, which regulates the menstrual cycle, breast development, brain function, pregnancy, and many other body features. |
| Testosterone | The most important of the male sex hormones. Both males and females have it, but the additional testosterone in males stimulates the growth of the male sex organs in the fetus and the development of the male sex characteristics during puberty |
| Growth Hormone (GH) | Triggers bone and muscle cell growth. also breaks down fat. |
| Luteinizing hormone (LH) | Stimulates ovaries and testes to produce estrogen or testosterone |
| Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) | Stimulates production of eggs or sperm |
| Prolactin (PRL) | Stimulates milk production by mammary glands |
| Oxytocin (OT) | Increases the contractions of the uterus during birth and promotes the release of breast milk. also affects social bonding. |
| Antidiuretic hormone (ADH) | Causes kidneys to retain water, which increases blood pressure |
| Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) | This hormone stimulates the adrenal glands to release adrenaline hormones |
| Parathormone (PTH) | This hormone raises calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood by taking these minerals from bone |
| Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) | This hormone is released by the heart when it is under intense pressure. it causes the kidneys to excrete more water and lower blood pressure. |
| Gastrin | Hormone secreted in the stomach that stimulates secretion of HCl and increases gastric motility |
| Leptin | Hormone secreted by fat cells that decreases hunger sense, increases bone mass, and helps the body cope with obesity. |
