| Term | Definition |

| stratus | clouds that form in flat layers; it means spread out in Latin |
| cumulus | clouds that look like cotton; it means heap in Latin |
| cirrus | wispy, feathery clouds made of ice crystals that form at high levels |
| flood | an overflowing of water in a normally dry area |
| drought | a long period of scarce rainfall and dry weather |
| tropical airmass | an airmass that forms in the tropics (near Equator) and has low air pressure |
| air mass | a huge body of air in the lower atmosphere that has similar temperature, humidity and air pressure |
| jet stream | bands of high speed winds 6-14km above the Earth that move air masses |
| polar air mass | air mass formed above 50 degrees north latitude or below 50 degrees south latitude |
| maritime air mass | air mass that forms over the ocean |
| continental air mass | air mass that forms over land |
| front | the boundary where air masses meet |
| cyclone | a swirling center of low pressure air |
| anticyclone | high pressure centers of dry air |
| storm | a violent disturbance in the atmosphere; involves sudden changes in air pressure which cause rapid air movement |
| thunderstorm | a small storm often accompanied by heavy precipitation and frequent thunder and lightning |
| tornado | a rapidly whirling funnel shaped cloud that reaches down from a thunderstorm to touch the Earth's surface |
| storm surge | a dome of water that sweeps across the coast where a hurricane lands |
| hurricane | a tropical cyclone with winds of 119km/hour or higher |
| climate | long term weather |
| isotherm | lines joining places that have the same temperature |
| isobar | lines joining places that have the same air pressure |
| meteorologist | scientists who study and predict the weather |
