Matter

Use this stack to help you review for the matter test.

QuestionAnswer
What is a property? A quality that a substance has (red, shiny, smooth, soft)
What is matter? Anything that has weight and takes up space. It can exist as a solid, liquid, or gas.
What is diffusion? The process by which particles of one substance spread out through the particles of another substance. It is how smells spread through the air.
What is a component? One of the several parts that make up a whole system.
What is a system? A group of related parts that work together as a whole for a particular purpose.
What is volume? A measurement of the amount of space that a substance or object fills or the amount of space it takes up in a container.
What is a particle? The smallest possible unit of matter. It is too small to be seen with just your eyes.
What is a category? A group of people or things that are all of the same type.
What is a microbe? A tiny decomposer that breaks down dead plant and animal matter into small pieces that go back into the soil. A gas that smells is released into the air.
What happens to the type and amount of material when things are crushed? It does not change. It weighs the same before and after it is crushed.
How did we know that the elephant toothpaste we made in class was a new substance? The properties of the materials changed.
Why didn't the weight of the closed landfill bottle change? The matter was changed into a gas as it decomposed and was trapped in the bottle.
