Matter
Use this stack to help you review for the matter test.

| What is a property? | A quality that a substance has (red, shiny, smooth, soft) |
| What is matter? | Anything that has weight and takes up space. It can exist as a solid, liquid, or gas. |
| What is diffusion? | The process by which particles of one substance spread out through the particles of another substance. It is how smells spread through the air. |
| What is a component? | One of the several parts that make up a whole system. |
| What is a system? | A group of related parts that work together as a whole for a particular purpose. |
| What is volume? | A measurement of the amount of space that a substance or object fills or the amount of space it takes up in a container. |
| What is a particle? | The smallest possible unit of matter. It is too small to be seen with just your eyes. |
| What is a category? | A group of people or things that are all of the same type. |
| What is a microbe? | A tiny decomposer that breaks down dead plant and animal matter into small pieces that go back into the soil. A gas that smells is released into the air. |
| What happens to the type and amount of material when things are crushed? | It does not change. It weighs the same before and after it is crushed. |
| How did we know that the elephant toothpaste we made in class was a new substance? | The properties of the materials changed. |
| Why didn't the weight of the closed landfill bottle change? | The matter was changed into a gas as it decomposed and was trapped in the bottle. |
