| paradox | statement that appears to be contradictory on the surface but turns out to explores a stinking truth. |
| oxymoron | closely links two seemingly contrary elements in a way that, on further consideration, turns out to make good sense. |
| periphrasis | figure of thought in which a point is stated by a deliberate roundabout expression rather than directly |
| pun | figure of thought that plays on words that have the same sound but sharply contrasted meanings |
| rhetorical question | figure of speech in which a question is posed not to solicit a reply but to emphasize a foregone or clearly implied conclusion |
| epiphany | a sudden, overwhelming insight or revelation evoked by a commonplace object or scene in a poem or work of fiction |
| parenthetical observation | a brief interruption during which the character reflects on a minor point that seizes his attention |
| subplot | secondary stories that parallel or contrast with the main action |
| sentence fragment | sentence that is so punctuated but that lacks either a subject, predicate or both |
| independent clause | sentence that contains a subject and predicate and can stand alone as a grammatical unit |
| dependent clause | a group of words that contains a subject and predicate but cannot stand alone as a grammatical unit |
| coordination | a reference to the equivalent importance of two clauses |
| simple sentence | consists of a single independent clause |
| compound sentence | contains more than one independent clause with no subordinate clauses |
| complex sentence | contains not only an independent clause but also one or more subordinate clauses |
