Module 8
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| radian | 1/2 pi of a revolution |
| angular displacement | the change in an angle as an object rotates |
| angular velocity/speed | the angular displacement of an object divided by the time needed to make the angular displacement |
| angular acceleration | the change in angular velocity divided by the time needed to make the change; measured in rad/s^2 |
| lever arm | the perpendicular distance from the axis of rotation to the point where the force is exerted. |
| torque | the combination of force and lever arm that can cause an object to rotate; the magnitude is equal to the force times the perpendicular lever arm |
| moment of inertia | the resistance to rotation |
| Newton's Second Law of Rotational Motion | states that the angular acceleration of an object is directly proportional to the net torque on it and inversely proportional to its moment of inertia |
| center of mass | the point on the object that moves in the same way a point particle would move |
