Ancient Greese

TermDefinition
City-State A city that rules the surrounding land.
Colony A country or area under the full or partial control of another country.
Peninsula A piece of land almost surrounded by water or projecting out into a body of water.
Isthmus A narrow strip of land.
Polis The polis was the ancient greek city-state.
Acropolis It was the highest part of the polis.
Port/Harbor Greeks used the harbors trade with other city states.
Temple Temple was built for the gods or goddeses
Wall Wall used for protection
Agora The Agora was the market place.
Theater The Theater could hold thousands of people and for greeks it was a normal part of life.
Stadium Was used to hold athletic events.
How did mountains effect the development of Greek city-states? Mountains seperated the Greeks and made city-states.
How did te sea affect the development of Greek city-states Used the sea to establish colonies and trade with other people.
Who was monarchy ruled by? Monarchy was ruled by a single leader who inherited the right to rule.
How did Monarchy rule? The Monarchy ruler created laws, acted as judges and lead the army in war.
What led to the decline of Monarchy? Aristocrats overthrew the Monarchy.
Who was Oligarchy ruled by? The oligrachy was ruled by a group of wealthy people 2-3.
How did Oligarchs rule? They did chariot races, parties, passed laws that made them richer.
What lead to the decline of Oligrachy? Army leaders overthrew the Oligarchs.
Who was Tyranny ruled by. Tyranny was ruled by a single ruler.
How did Tryants rule? Greek tyrants made false promises.
What lead to the decline of Tyranny? The people of Athens wanted a goverment that shared power for everyone.
How is a monarch/king different from a tyrant/dictator? A monarch is different from a tyrant because they didn't use force to gain power, they inherited power from the bloodline.
What difficulties did mountains create for Greek city-states? Farms and villages were isolated or seperated. They couldn't travel or communicate.
What dangers were there when trading and traveling by sea? It was uncomfortable and dangerous. Might be attacked by pirates.
Why did Greeks set up colonies? They did not have enough farmland to feed their people.
What goods did Greeks trade from mainland Greece? They traded olive oil, pottery, and wine.
What did Greeks get in exchange for their goods? They got grain, timber and metal.
