City-State A city with a single ruler who controls the surrounding land.
Colony A settlement in a distant place: Asia Minor/ Rome searching for fertile land
Peninsula Land surrounded by water on three sides
Isthmus a narrow strip of land connecting two larger pieces of land: Attica- Peloponnese
Polis Another name for Ancient Greek City-states
Acropolis the hill above the city with a wall
Port/Harbor A place where the ships docked to trade goods
Temple beautiful dwelling places for the the gods and goddesses (not places to worship)  Religious ceremonies were conducted outside
Wall Used for protection
Agora Marketplace where people went to buy and sell goods. Also a meeting place to talk, and listen to speakers discuss important issues
Theater A place people went to watch plays/drama
Stadium A place where people competed/played sports
How did mountains affect the development of Ancient Greece? Isolated city-states which make them independent of each other, Made trade and travel difficult
How did seas affect the development of Ancient Greece? Used the seas to trade and travel with other city-states to get goods needed, Used seas to set up colonies in Rome and Asia Minor for fertile land
Who is a Monarchy ruled by? A king who inherited power had help from advisors/aristocrats
How did Monarchs rule/ what were their responsibilities? Created laws, acted as judges, led the army
What led to the decline of a Monarchy? Advisors wanted power for themselves so they overthrew the king
Who is a Oligarchy ruled by? A few wealthy men who overthrew the king
How did Oligarchs rule? Used force to get the people to obey the laws
What led to the decline of a Oligarchy? Oligarchs passed laws to make them wealthier. The poor turned to the military generals who promised more rights to overthrow the oligarchs. They would take over and become tyrants
Who is a Tyranny ruled by? A single ruler who seized power
How did Tyrants rule? Made false promises and used force to control people
What led to the decline of a Tyranny? People revolted against tyrant because of false promises and wanted all citizens to share power
Who is a Direct Democracy ruled by? All male citizens over the age of 18
How did they rule in a Direct Democracy? Citizens in the Assembly would propose and vote on laws such as trade, war and taxes
What led to the decline of a Direct Democracy? It continued in Greece
How is a monarch/king different from a tyrant/dictator? Monarch inherits power and tyrant uses force, Monarch gets help from advisors and tyrant does not
What difficulties did mountains create for the Greek city-states? Made trade and travel difficult, City-states were isolated and independent from each other
What dangers were there when trading and traveling by sea? Attacked by pirates, Sudden storms could smash ships on rocks sinking them
Why did the Greeks set up colonies? Greece did not have enough farmland to feed their people therefore set up colonies in Rome and Asia Minor for fertile land
What goods did the Greeks trade from mainland Greece? Pottery, Olive oil, honey
What did the Greeks get in exchange for their goods? (Name specific goods) Timber, Grain, Metal
