Metabolic Reactions
Term | Definition |
---|---|
carbohydrates | food molecules that contain carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms |
alveoli | any of the many tiny sacs of the lungs which allow for rapid gas exchange |
amino acids | a simple organic compound that facilitates chemical reactions in our bodies |
amylase | an enzyme, found chiefly in saliva and pancreatic fluid, that converts starch and glycerin into simple sugars |
bronchi | the large tubes that connect your trachea to the right and left lungs |
calories | stored energy in food molecules |
cell | smallest block of life |
cell membrane | semi-permeable membrane surrounding the cytoplasm of a cell |
cellular respiration | chemical reaction in all living things that combines food and oxygen to release energy |
digestive system | a network of organs that help you digest and absorb nutrients from your food |
esophagus | the canal that connects the throat to the stomach |
fatty acids | a carboxylic acid that serves muscles, heart, and other organs as building blocks for cell membranes and as energy stored for the body |
fats | form the body's main energy store and convert into fuels as needed |
glucose | sugar, small food molecule, simple |
large intestines | the cecum, colon, and rectum |
lungs | adds oxygen to and removing carbon dioxide from the blood |
organ | apart of an organism that is typically self-contained and has a special function |
protein | large, complex molecules that play many critical roles in the body |
respiratory system | breathe in air, absorb oxygen in tho the bloodstream, and breathe out carbon dioxide |
semi-permeable membrane | a layer that only certain molecules can pass though |
small intestine | part of the intestine that runs between the stomach and large intestine |
starch | complex carbohydrate, large food molecule |
villi | small fingerlike structures in the small intestine that have tiny openings to absorb food molecules |
digestion | a chemical reaction to break down food |
tissue | group of cells working together |
fiber | very large food molecule, complex but cannot break down |
absorption | when food molecules go through the tiny openings in the wall of the small intestine and into the body |
organ system | a group of organs that work together in the body to solve a problem |
