TermDefinition
rotation Earth spinning around its axis once every 24 hours, resulting in day and night.
revolution The movement of Earth in its orbit around the sun resulting in a year.
orbit The path an object follows as it travels around another object in space.
summer solstice About June 21, when the sun is directly shining on the northern hemisphere providing the most hours of sunlight.
winter solstice About December 21, when the sun is directly shining on the southern hemisphere providing the least hours of sunlight.
vernal equinox About March 21, when neither hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the sun. On this day, all areas of the Earth have equal hours of day and night.
autumnal equinox About September 21, when neither hemisphere is tilted toward or away from the sun. On this day, all areas of the Earth have equal hours of day and night.
lunar eclipse SEM The shadow of Earth blocks out the moon light.
solar eclipse SME The shadow of the moon blocks out the suns light.
gravity The force that attracts all objects toward each other.
neap tide A special tide that happens during 1st quarter and 3rd quarter moon with the least difference in water level between high tide and low tide.
spring tide A special tide that happens during new and full moon with the greatest difference in water level between high tide and low tide.
ocean tide A change in the ocean water level that typically reaches a high and low twice a day caused by the moon's gravity.
