Quality Assurance
Term | Definition |
---|---|
raw data | mesurements |
treated data | worked up data (found concentrations, graph) -may exclude outliers |
results | final values and interpretations |
false positive | returns a positive result when it should be negative |
false negative | returns a negative result when it should be positive |
Blank sample | has no analyte |
reagent blank | contains all other reagents other than the analyte |
method blank | reagent blank that has bene run through all the processing steps of the procedure |
field blank | method blank includimg similar environmental exposure to the analysis samples |
sample matirx | rest of the sample other than the analyte -ex. DI water or ocean water |
spike | -signal change based on analyte added to a sample |
selectivity | what the method responds to, whether is it just the analyte or other things as well. |
accuracy | how close you are to the correct answer |
Precision | how close your values are to each other |
reproducibility | within your data, similarity between each run or from day to day |
repeatability | similarity of results between diferent analysis' or labs |
Dynamic range | concentration range of analyte where precise within acceptable limits |
Working range | including limitations of sample prep or lab capability (not just instrument response or theoretical limits) |
Limit of Linearity (LOL) | upper bound where instrument response stops being linear |
sensitivity | how reactive the instument is due to analyte change |
Limit of detection (LOD) | lowest amount of analyte we can reliably detect |
Limit of quanitification | lowets amount of analyte we can reliably quantify |
Reporting limit | minimum concentration- below this, amount recorded as 0 |
Robustness | ability of the method to withstand small variations in conditions and still give acceptable results |
Internal standard | similar to but not the analyte (ex. using F- when measuring Cl-) |
Standard addition | constant amount of unknown sample is added to the standards in a concentration series |
