Term | Definition |
---|---|
Types of samples | -complex -insoluble -short-lived (volatile) |
Fusion (melting) | -dissolves inorganic compounds in hot molten salt (flux) then dissolves the compound in acid |
Ashing | -can be dry or wet (add acid) -breakdown organic substances to make them less bulky -combusting organic material |
Digestion | -acid dissolution in a microwave -seal sample to increase the pressure |
Derivatization | -chemically modifying a substance to make it easier to dissolve, detect or separate |
Liquid-liquid extraction | -dissolves analyte in solvent and leaves most of the matrix behind |
Sampling | process of collecting representative sample for analysis |
Lot | total material from which samples are taken from |
bulk sample | -aka gross sample -taken from the lot for analysis -must be representative of the lot |
Sample preparation | series of steps taken that convert a representative bulk sample into a form that is able to be analyzed |
ball mill | form of grinding where ceramic or steel balls are rotated inside a drum to form a fine powder |
