Sample prep

TermDefinition
Types of samples -complex -insoluble -short-lived (volatile)
Fusion (melting) -dissolves inorganic compounds in hot molten salt (flux) then dissolves the compound in acid
Ashing -can be dry or wet (add acid) -breakdown organic substances to make them less bulky -combusting organic material
Digestion -acid dissolution in a microwave -seal sample to increase the pressure
Derivatization -chemically modifying a substance to make it easier to dissolve, detect or separate
Liquid-liquid extraction -dissolves analyte in solvent and leaves most of the matrix behind
Sampling process of collecting representative sample for analysis
Lot total material from which samples are taken from
bulk sample -aka gross sample -taken from the lot for analysis -must be representative of the lot
Sample preparation series of steps taken that convert a representative bulk sample into a form that is able to be analyzed
ball mill form of grinding where ceramic or steel balls are rotated inside a drum to form a fine powder
