OCEAN ZONES

ABYSSOPLALAGIC ZONE Ocean Depth between 4000-6000 meters in the aphotic or aka: midnight zone
APHOTIC ZONE The area of ocean where light does not penetrate - aka midnight zone
BATHYPELAGIC ZONE The depth of the ocean 1000-4000 meters; in the aphotic or midnight zone.
BENTHIC The bottom environment;refers to animals living on or in the seabed.
BIOME A large-area ecosystem sharing similar characteristics; an environmental unit.
DISPHOTIC ZONE The dimly lit region of the ocean where there is not enough light to carry on photosynthesis-aka:the twilight zone
EPIPELAGIC ZONE The upper layer of water extending to depth of 200 meters in the photic aka :sunlight zone
HADALPELAGIC The depth of the ocean below 6000 meters in the deep-ocean trenches in the aphotic or midnight zone
MESOPELAGIC The middle layer of the ocean water between 200 and 1000 meters in the disphic or twilight zone
NEKTON Free swimming organisms
PELAGIC Pertaining to the seas or oceans
PHOTIC ZONE The lighted region of the ocean; an area where photosynthesis can occur aka: the sunlight zone
PLANKTON The small usually microscopic plant or animal organisms that float or drift in the ocean
SESSILE Organisms that are attached to a surface and cannot move around.
SUBLITTORAL ZONE The benthic area of the continental shelf below the low tide area
SUPRALITTORAL ZONE The dry area above the high-tide line; aks the spray or splash zone
NERITIC PROVINCE Waters over the continental shelf-NEAR the shore line.
LITTORAL ZONE The area between the tides.
EPIFAUNA Animals that live ON the surface of the seabed.
INFAUNA The animals that live IN the sediments of the sea floor
