ebb | to flow back or away, as the water of a tide (opposed to flow). to decline or decay; fade away: His life is gradually ebbing. |
sporadic | occurring occasionally, singly, or in irregular or random instances. |
toehold | A literal toehold is an area where at least part of your foot can fit and that's strong enough to hold your weight. |
slur | an insulting or disparaging remark or innuendo : aspersion. b. : a shaming or degrading effect : stain, stigma. |
erratic | irregular in performance, behavior, or attitude; inconsistent and unpredictable. having no fixed or regular course; wandering. |
etch | If you etch something you are cutting into it. You can etch "I ♥ U" into a tree trunk with a pocket knife or etch your initials in your desk with a key (if the teacher's not looking). |
disheveled | People or things that are disheveled are kind of a mess. Wrinkled clothes, knotted hair, and a chaotic house might earn the adjective disheveled. |
