Light Waves

QuestionAnswer
Define electromagnetic waves. Electromagnetic waves are waves of vibrating electric and magnetic fields.
What do electromagnetic waves carry? Electro magnetic waves carry radiant energy.
How fast do electromagnetic waves travel in a vacuum? In a vacuum, electromagnetic waves travel at 300 m/sec. or 186,000 miles/sec.
List the colors included in the part of the electromagnetic spectrum called visible light. Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Violet
Explain why objects have different colors. Objects have different colors because they reflect and absorb different colors of light.
Define reflection. Reflection is the bouncing of light waves off of a surface.
Explain how white and black objects reflect and absorb light. White objects reflect all colors of light. Black objects absorb all colors of light.
What is refraction? Refraction is the bending of a light wave when it passes from one medium to another.
Explain why ultraviolet light passing through a prism would be bent more than visible light. Ultraviolet light has a shorter wavelength than visible light, so it would be bent more than visible light.
Substances that light cannot travel through. Opaque objects.
Substances that light can travel through. Transparent objects.
Light can travel through this medium, but the light that travels through is so scattered that objects cannot be seen clearly. Translucent objects.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
