Organisms & Environments

TermDefinition
consumer An organism that must eat other organisms to obtain energy.
decomposer An organism responsible for breaking down dead plants and animals and returning the nutrients to the soil.
ecosystem All the living and nonliving things that interact in an area.
environment All the living and nonliving things in an area.
interdependence Relationships between living things, and between living things and nonliving things for survival.
living thing An organism. Something that requires basic needs and is alive.
nonliving thing A factor in the environment that has no basic needs and was never alive.
photosythesis A process used by plants to make their own energy.
producer An organism that must create its own energy through phtosythesis.
food chain A model used to show a single path energy takes as it moves through an ecosystem.
food web A model used to show multiple paths energy takes as it moves through an ecosystem.
invasive species An organism introduced into an ecosystem that is not native, has no natural predators, and causes harm.
overpopulation An excess of a single species.
perish To die.
scarcity A lack of resources to meet basic needs.
