How have the townspeople been affected by the last several months of court proceedings? Children are now wandering orphans, cattle wander the roads, farms are abandoned, and people are terrified of being accused of witchcraft.
What is Parris' real reason for pleading for postponement of the executions? He fears for his life because he is the cause of these respectable people getting hanged. Their deaths may anger others to attack him.
What makes Danforth anxious to obtain confessions? At the same time, why does he refuse to postpone the executions? Danforth needs the confessions to justify that he has rightfully convicted guilty people. He cannot postpone because this could blemish his reputation as a judge by being unfair to others and unsure of his convictions.
Why has Hale returned to Salem? Hale is trying convince the accused to confess in order to save their lives.
Why doesn't Elizabeth beg John to sign the confession? Signing a confession such as that is a huge moral decision that she wants John to make for himself. She wants him to choose between living a hypocritical life and dying a truthful moral man.
How has Elizabeth changed during her imprisonment? She admits that she has been a bad, cold wife to John and confesses she could be blamed for part of his lechery.
How did Giles die? Why did he refuse to answer the charge? He was pressed under large rocks. He refused to answer the charge because if he truthfully denied it, he would have been hanged and his property sold. He refused to admit to a crime he did not commit.
What makes John finally tear up the confession and decide it is better to hang? He decides he does not want his name to be hypocritical and hung on the door where everyone could see it. He wanted to keep his honest name as he died.
What happened to Elizabeth Proctor after the witch hunt madness ended? She remarried 4 years after and received compensation 20 years later.
What happened to Reverend Parris after the witch hunt madness ended? He was voted from office, walked down the road, and disappeared.
What happened to Abigail after the witch hunt madness ended? She ran off with her uncle's money, got on a ship, and went to Boston where she became a prostitute.
