Tenure of Office Act cannot fire appointed officials in presidency(cabinet member) fear of johnson firing his cabinet officals. Senate has to approve of the firing.
plot against Johnson the reason: trying to fire Stanton, 11 charges, violation of tenure of office act. Too many charges and people got confused and lost votes, so Johnson stayed by 1 vote. A failed impeachment.

scandals made republican gov very weak and democrat power rose in the meantime
election of 1876 Democrat: Samuel Tilden vs. republican: Hayes. Scandals hurt republican reputation. Tilden won. Republican contest the results and say many southern state can't be trusted, flipping them to republican. So Hayes won
Compromise of 1877 Hayes got electoral votes in exchange for end of military occupation in the South, so white democrats control the south (for almost a century) SOUTH WON RECONTRUCTION
effect of end reconstruction weak, small government, democrats dominated, sharecropping and tenet farming, poll taxes (against rights to vote, civil rights), segregation and Jim Crow Laws "separate and equal"
