Math module 5

TermDefinition
In a power, the number that tells how many times the base is used as a factor. In 5^3 the exponent is 3. That is, 5^3= 5 × 5 × 5.
Exponent
Base In a power, the number used as a factor. In 10^3, the base is 10. That is, 10^3= 10x10x10
Powers A number expressed using an exponent. The power 3^3 is read three to the second power, or three squared.
Numerical Expression A combination of numbers and operations
Evaluate To find the value of an algebraic expression by replacing variables with numbers
Order of Operations The rules that tell which operation to perform first when more than one operation is used.
Algebra A mathematical language of symbols, including variables.
Algebraic expression A combination of variables, numbers, and at least one operation.
Coefficient The numerical factor of a term that contains a variable.
Constant A term without a variable
Defining the variable Choosing a variable and deciding what the variable represents.
Like terms Terms that contain the same variable(s) to the same power.
term Each part of an algebraic expression separated by a plus or minus
variable A symbol, usually a letter, used to represent a number.
Common factor A number that is a factor of two or more numbers
Greatest common factor The greatest of the common factors of two or more numbers
Least common multiple The smallest whole number greater than 0 that is a common multiple of each of two or more numbers.
Distributive property To multiply a sum by a number, multiply each addend by the number outside the parentheses. A(b+c)=ab+ac
Factoring the expression The process of writing numeric or algebraic expressions as a product of their factors.
Associative Property The way in which umbers are grouped does not change the sum or product.
Commutative property The order in which numbers are added or multiplied does not change the sum or product.
Associative Property The way in which numbers are grouped does not change the sum or product.
Commutative Property The order in which numbers are added or multiplied does not change the sum or product.
Distributive property To multiply a sum by a number, multiply each addend by the number outside the parentheses.
equivalent expressions Expressions that have the same value, regardiess of the values of the variable(s).
Identity property Properties that state that the sum of any number and 0 equals the number and that the product of any number and 1 equals the number.
Simplest form The status of an expression when it has no like terms and no parentheses.
