Imperialism

TermDefinition
Imperialism A policy in which one country seeks to extend its authority by conquering other countries or by establishing economic and political dominance over other countries
Colony A country or territory governed internally by a foreign power (form of imperialism)
Protectorate A country or territory with its own internal government but under the control of an outside power (form of imperialism)
Sphere of Influence An area in which an outside power claims exclusive investment or trading privileges (form of imperialism)
Economic imperialism An independent but less developed country controlled by private business interests, rather than governments (form of imperialism)
Indirect Control Local government officials used Limited self-rule Goal: to develop future leaders Government institutions are based on European styles but may have local rules (Imperial Management Method)
Direct Control Foreign officials brought in to rule No self-rule Goal: Assimilation Government institutions are based only on European styles (Imperial Management Method)
The Berlin Conference 1884-85 Established rules by which Western Imperialist nations must follow: - increased communication between countries - organized the division of the African continent * They hoped this agreement would keep peace.
