Sound Waves

Chapter 4 Lesson 2

Explain what sound waves are produced by. Sound waves are produced by vibrations.
What is an echo? An echo is a reflected sound.
Explain what a reverberation is. A reverberation is a combination of many echoes.
What causes a higher frequency of sound? The faster the vibration, the higher the frequency.
Define pitch. The perception of the frequency of a sound as being high or low.
What is the range that people hear? 20-20,000 hertz
What animal can hear at very high hertz frequencies? Dog
What animal can hear at very low hertz frequencies? Elephant
What is loudness? Loudness is the perception of the amplitude of a soundwave.
What is loudness measured in? Loudness is measured in decibels (dB).
How many more times does light travel faster than sound? Light travels 1 million times faster than sound.
Explain why sound travels better through water, wood, and metal. Sound travels better through these substances because the molecules of liquids and solids are closer together and bump into each other more often.
