| Endocrine system | – body system that produces hormones |
| Thyroid | – butterfly shaped gland located at the base of the neck, regulates metabolism |
| Pancreas | – gland that produces insulin regulates break down and use of carbohydrates |
| Adrenal glands | – glands that produce adrenaline, fight or flight response |
| Gonads | – glands that produce sex hormones and gametes (sperm or ovum) |
| Hyper | - high or overactive |
| Hypo | - low or underactive |
| Hormones | – chemical messengers that regulate vital body processes |
| Steroids | – regulate multiple processes in the body such as building muscle and reducing inflammation |
| Insulin | – hormone responsible for regulating amount of glucose in the body |
| Glucagon | – hormone produced in the pancreas that helps liver change glycogen to glucose |
| Estrogen | – hormone associated with “female” characteristics in the body, important to libido for both sexes and menstruation in women |
| Progesterone | – hormone associated with pregnancy and lactation, also important for sleep and respiration during sleep |
| Testosterone | – hormone associated with “male” characteristics in the body, important for muscle mass and libido in both sexes |
| Hypothyroidism | – low thyroid function |
| Hyperthyroidism | – overactive thyroid |
| Hyperglycemia | – high blood sugar |
| Hypoglycemia | – low blood sugar |
| Diabetes mellitus | – inability to metabolize carbohydrates, usually due to insufficient insulin production or insulin receptor insensitivity |
| High alert medication | – medication that if used in error can cause great harm to the patient |
| Narrow therapeutic index | – a medication with which a small variance in dose has a big effect on the patient. |
| Glucose | – blood sugar |
| Homeostasis | – the tendency of the body to keep everything the same at all times (i.e. blood pressure, blood sugar, heart rate, oxygenation, fluid retention, etc) |
