What are key labs for a nurse to keep a watch on for medications that are metabolized through the kidneys or for patients who have kidney disease? BUN and Creatinine

The peak level of a drug means? When the medication is at the highest level in the blood

What is a normal Vancomycin Trough level? between 10-20-Hold for anything higher
What does a medication half life mean? The amount of time it takes for the medication level to drop by 1/2 (50%) in the body
What types of interactions does a nurse need to consider with medications? Food-Drug Interactions, Drug-Drug Interactions
For a patient with liver or kidney disease what happens to a standard half-life of a medication? The nurse expects the duration of the medication or half life to be increased-it takes longer to reach peak and elimination time is longer-stays in the body longer
What types of things affect absorption of a medication? metabolism, age, chronic illnesses, food, alcohol, liver/kidney diseases, gastric diseases, other medications
Tylenol is the brand/Trade or generic name? Trade name
What is the generic name for Tylenol? Acetaminophen
How are Trade names indicated on a med bottle? The trade name is bold and large and in unique packaging often has an r with a circle around it at the right corner of the name
How are generic names indicated on a med bottle? the writing is usually in lower case, not bolded and plain in contrast

Antibiotics are used to treat? Bacterial infections
What does bacteriostatic mean? they disturb the reproduction or progression of a germ
What does bacteriocidal mean? They destroy or kill the germ
What does narrow spectrum antibiotic mean? They only kill a few types of bacteria
What does broad spectrum antibiotic mean? They kill many types of bacteria
What type of antibiotic is penicillin, bacteriostatic or bacteriocidal? Bacteriocidal

What labs need to be monitored with Carbapenems? BUN, Cre, and liver function test
What is a key side effect caused by infusing Vancomycin too rapidly- not an allergic response, but soley due to rapid infusion Red Man Syndrome
What types of infections is Vancomycin good for? Many, but primarily C-Diff and MRSA-superinfections
What are signs of allergic reaction? Hives, Itching, Swelling lips, face, eyes, tongue, scratchy throat, difficulty breathing
What is a nurses best initial responses when recognizing an allergic reaction? Stop the med and secure the patients airway is patent (open and stable), notify provider
