Bio P3 - Domains

QuestionAnswer
State the 3 domains and the kingdoms in each. Domain Bacteria -> Kingdom Eubacteria | Domain Archaea -> Kingdom Archaea Bacteria | Domain Eukaryota -> Animalia, Plantae, Fungi, Protista
Compare and contrast the characteristics of the 3 domains. Eukaryotes have a nucleus and membrane bound organelles | Bacteria and Archaea do not have a nucleus. Bacteria have a cell wall made with peptidoglycan. | Archaea is the most ancient domain, and most related to eukaryotes.
Explain the difference between Kingdom Protista and Kingdom Fungi based on substances in their cell walls. Fungi's cell wall is made of chitin, while protists have cell walls made of cellulose
Classify to the Kingdom Level an organism that has organs systems, lacks cell walls, and ingests food. Kingdom Animalia
Summarize the reason why systematist separated Kingdom Eubacteria from Kingdom Archaea. Archaebacteria have different cell wall components than bacteria. They also have differing components of their lipid membranes, and differences in rRNA
Write an argument for and against including viruses in the biological classification system. F: can b classified as living beings bcz they contain either DNA or RNA, which is a importnt 4 all living organisms. A: However, viruses are "living" only when in a host cell, being inert w/o. They depend on the host cell to be alive and multiply
What kingdom of organisms has peptidoglycan in the cell walls? Eubacteria
What kingdom contains organisms called extremophiles? Archaea Bacteria
What is an extremophile? An extremophile is an organism that thrives in extreme environments, such as extreme temperatures, acidity, or high chemical concentrations.
What kingdom contains types of organisms that are used to make food like bread and cheese? Fungi
What taxon contains one or more kingdoms? A domain.
Where would prokaryotes found living in acid run off or sulfur vents of volcanoes likely be classified? Archaea and/or extremophiles
In which Kingdom would an organism that has chloroplast, cell walls, but no organs be classified? Protista
What substances would most likely be in the cell walls of an organism with chloroplast and tissue? Cellulose
Predict in which domain a taxonomist would place a newly discovered photosynthetic organisms that has cells without membrane bound organelles and no peptidoglycan. Archaea
To which group are crustaceans most closely related? Insects
How did the molecular evidence change the relationship between centipedes and spiders? Cladogram on the left shows that spiders and centipedes have a common ancestor whereas the cladogram on the right shows that spiders & centipedes have evolved in series.
Which group in the cladogram appears to be the most ancestral? Sea Spiders
