allusion | An implied or direct reference to a different well |
end Rhyme | Rhyming words that occur at the end of two or more lines of poetry |
figurative Language | Any language goes beyond its literal meaning of words and is usually meant to create new effects, fresh insights |
free verse | Poetry that does not have a regular pattern of meter, rhyme scheme, or form |
imagery | language that stimulates the reader's memory that appeals to one of the five senses |
internal rhyme | rhyme that occurs within a line, rather than at the end |
metaphor | A comparison of two things without using like or as |
onomatopoeia | A word that imitates the sound it represents. |
personification | giving inanimate objects or abstract concepts living or human qualities like qualities |
prose | writing organized into sentences and paragraphs that is not poetry |
rhythm | The pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in lines of verse. |
simile | A comparison of two unlike things using like or as |
stanza | A group of lines arranged together in a poem |
prose | words written in standard English (vs poetry) |
line | one line or words in a poem |
anaphora | the deliberate repetition of the first part of words or phrases in order to achieve emphasis or artistic effect |
couplet | Two consecutive lines of poetry that rhyme |
tercet | three line stanza |
quatrain | A four line stanza |
cinquain | 5 lines of poetry |
sestet | 6 lines of poetry |
septet | 7 lines of poetry |
octave | 8 lines of poetry |
sonnet | a 14-line poem that follows a specific rhythm and rhyme scheme |
iamb | a metrical foot consisting of an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable |
trochee | A metrical foot consisting of one stressed syllable followed by one unstressed syllable |
anapest | a metrical foot consisting of two unstressed syllables followed by a stressed syllable |
envoy | a short stanza at the end of a poem used as a summation or dedication |
enjambment | the continuation of a sentence without a pause beyond the end of a line |
caesura | an interruption or pause in the middle of a line |
symbolism | a person, place, or object that represents some idea or thing beyond itself |
