| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Matter | Anything that has mass and volume |
| Condensation | When a vapor or gas changes into the liquid phase |
| Deposition | When a gas changes directly into a solid |
| Freezing | When a liquid changes into the solid phase |
| Fusion | Process of particles in the solid phase gaining enough energy to break into the liquid phase; aka Melting |
| Gaseous Phase | A phase of matter without definite shape or volume |
| Heat | Energy transferred from one substance to another; measured in calories or joules |
| Heat of Fusion | The amount of heat absorbed to change a substance from a solid to a liquid at its melting point |
| Heat of Vaporization | Amount of heat absorbed to change a substance from a liquid to a gas at its boiling point |
| Kinetic Molecular Theory | A theory used to explain the behavior of gases in terms of the motion of their particles |
| Liquid Phase | A phase of matter having definite volume but no definite shape |
| Solid Phase | A phase of matter having a definite shape and volume |
| Sublimation | The process in which a solid changes directly into a gas |
| Temperature | Measure of the average kinetic energy of a substance’s particles |
| Vaporization | Process of particles in the liquid phase gaining enough energy to break into the gaseous phase; aka boiling |
| Kinetic Energy | Energy of movement |
| Potential Energy | Stored energy |
| Distillation | Separation by boiling |
| Chromatography | Separation by polarity |
