Character Vocab
Term | Definition |

protagonist | the main character in a story, sometimes the “hero” |
antagonist | a character who works against the protagonist in some way, sometimes the “villain” |
round character | a fully developed character , like a real person, has good & bad sides to their personality, multiple character traits are developed |
flat character | a side character whose personality isn’t fully developed, we only see one side of them, not given emotional depth |
static character | a character who does not change or grow over the course of the story |
dynamic character | a character who changes/grows as a result of the events in the story |
character trait | words that describe the character’s personality, different than just a mood the character shows, traits are shown multiple times to be true about a character |
archetype | a character who fits a role/type of character that readers have seen in many other stories |
hero | the protagonist who rises to meet a challenge and saves the day |
villain | a character who displays characteristics of pure evil |
mentor/sage | a wise figure with knowledge for those who inquire |
caregiver | a character who continually supports others and makes sacrifices on their behalf |
magician | a powerful figure who uses magic & knows secrets of the universe |
loyal companion | a loyal friend to the main character. They never abandon their friend when in a tough situation |
lover | the romantic lead who’s guided by the heart |
jester | a funny character or trickster who provides comic relief, but may also speak important truths |
innocent | a morally pure character whose only intentions are good |
outlaw | the rebel who won’t abide by society’s demands |
ruler | character with legal or emotional power over others |
everyman | a relatable character who feels recognizable from daily life |
