Changes and Atoms

QuestionAnswer
What is a physical change? A change in appearance, not a change in chemical composition.
What is a chemical change? A change that results in the formation of a new susbstance with different chemical formula and properties.
Can physical or chemical changes be reversed? Physical changes MAY sometimes be reversed. Chemical changes can never be reversed.
List 5 pieces of evidence that a chemical reaction has taken place. 1. Change in energy (temperature or light) 2. Unexpected change in color 3. Production of gas 4. Production of a precipitate 5. Change in odor.
Breaking glass-physical or chemical change? Physical
Fireworks-physical or chemical change? Chemical
Bread molding-physical or chemical change? Chemical
Cutting paper-physical or chemical change? Physical
Painting paper-physical or chemical change? Physical
Fire buring-physical or chemical change? Chemical
Evaporation or Condensation-physical or chemical change? Physical
Melting or Freezing-physical or chemical change? Physical
Chemical Reaction-physical or chemical change? Chemical
What is a coefficent? The large number in front of a chemical formula. It represents the number of molecules. To find the number of atoms you must multiply the coeffcient by the number of atoms of an element.
What is the subscript? The small number written after the element symbol. It represents the number of atoms of an element.
What is a reactant? The materials present before a chemical reaction takes place. It is on the left side of the arrow.
What is the product? The materials after a chemical reaction takes place. It is on the right side of the arrow
What is the Law of Conservation of Mass? Matter cannot be created or destroyed. The mass of the reactant side must equal the mass of the product side. (The number of atoms for each element must be equal.)
What is a balanced equation? The number of atoms for each element on the reactanct side are equal to the number of atoms of each element on the product side
What is an unbalanced equation? The number of atoms for each element on the reactanct side do not equal the number of atoms for each element on the product side
What is the only thing that can change when balancing an equation? Coeffecient (number of molecules)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
