Unit 7 Stoichiometry
Chemistry Unit 7: Stoichiometry
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Mole Ratio | ratio between the amounts in moles of any two compounds involved in a chemical reaction; can be determined by looking at the coefficients |
| Molar Mass | physical property defined as the mass of a given substance (chemical element or chemical compound) divided by the amount of substance |
| excess reactant | in a chemical reaction with greater amount than necessary to react completely |
| theoretical yield | the quantity of a product obtained from the complete conversion of the limiting reactant in a chemical reaction |
| actual yield | amount actually produced of a product in a complete reaction |
| percentage yield | percent ratio of actual yield to the theoretical yield |
| balanced equation | the number of atoms for each element in the reaction and the total charge are the same for both the reactants and the products |
| reactant | a substance that takes part in and undergoes change during a reaction; left side of a chemical equation |
| product | a substance that is created during a chemical reaction; right side of a chemical equation |
| Dimensional analysis | the process of solving stoichiometric and other types of problems by including and canceling units for all quantities |
| Limiting reagent or reactant | the reactant that is completely consumed in a chemical reaction that determines the amount of product(s) produced |
| Stoichiometry | calculations using the molar relationships between the reactants and products in a balanced chemical equation |
