| aside | a stage whisper for the audience to hear |
| character foil | opposite characters in a scene; opposition creates tension |
| dynamic character | a character who changes or transforms by the ending of the literary piece |
| foreshadowing | clues or hints of later events |
| dramatic irony | a moment when the audience knows more than the characters |
| situational irony | the unexpected situation or event occurs |
| verbal irony | a double meaning of a word is used - both definitions work in the sentence |
| metaphor | a direct comparison of two items |
| monologue | a character's long speech while other characters are on stage and listen |
| simile | a comparison of two items using the words "like" or "as" |
| soliloquy | a character's long speech while alone on state; it shares the character's personal thoughts with the audience |
| static character | a character who stays the same |
| symbol | an object that represents an idea |
| turning point | an event that changes the direction of the plot |
