Human Body Organization

TermDefinition
cell The basic unit of structure and function in a living thing.
tissue Groups of similar cells that perform the same function.
organ Body structures composed of different kinds of tissues that work together.
organ system Groups of organs that work together, performing major functions in the body.
homeostasis The process by which an organism’s internal (inside) environment is kept stable in spite of changes in the external (outside) environment.
Functions of the Skeletal System (5) -Supports body -Protects internal organs -Allows movement -Stores minerals -Produces blood cells
Functions of the Muscular System (2) -With skeletal system, produces movement -Helps circulate blood and move food through the digestive system
Functions of the Circulatory System (3) -Transports oxygen, nutrients, and wastes -Fights infection -Helps regulate body temperature
Functions of the Respiratory System (2) -Brings in oxygen needed by cells -Removes carbon dioxide from body
Functions of the Digestive System (3) -Breaks down food -Absorbs nutrients -Removes food wastes
Functions of the Excretory System (1) -Removes waste products from the body
Functions of the Nervous System (1) -Controls the body's responses to changes within the body and outside it
Functions of the Endocrine System (2) -Controls growth, development, and energy processes -Helps maintain homeostasis
Functions of the Reproductive System (2) -Produces and delivers sex cells -Nurtures and protects developing embryo in females
Functions of the Immune System (2) -Fight infections -Attacks invading bacteria and viruses
Functions of the Integumentary System (2) -Guards against infection and injury -Helps regulate body temperature
