journalism final

journalism fall semester final 2023: journalism ethics

QuestionAnswer
Journalist The reporters, editors, photographers, producers, and camera crews that sift through the many happenings of a day to tell the public what's important or interesting.
Accuracy Getting all of the facts right and always seeking the truth
Alternative Facts vs. Facts We need to be very careful of the phrase "alternative Facts" and "fake news". There are multiple perspectives, but facts are facts. Just because you don't like the news doesn't mean it's fake.
On the record The source understands that his or her name will be published
Credibility Having the reputation of being right
Ethics Moral principles that govern the appropriate conduct for individuals and organizations
Conflict of Interest When journalists report on something they are personally involved with or in.
Primary source Sources who are directly involved in the issue being reported on
Secondary source Sources who are connected and knowledgeable but not directly involved.
Bias To report a story without being objective. To take a side, instead of showing balance.
Objective To keep an open mind and report both sides of an issue.
Fabrication Making up quotes and details to create a story more exciting or interesting, writing a story that didn't happen.
Impartial Being objective, putting aside personal opinions, and not accepting gifts, meals, trips, or anything else that could be seen as seeking to influence the news.
