TermDefinition
prefix an affix that's added in front of a word and often changes the meaning of it. Common examples include re-, un-, and mis-.
suffix a part of the word that's added onto the end, like the -ish in foolish
etymology the history of a word
tone a literary device that reflects the writer's attitude toward the topic or audience
mood the emotional response that the writer wishes to evoke in the reader through a story.
synonym a word that has the same or a similar meaning as another word
antonym a word that has the opposite meaning of another word
idiom a commonly used expression that has a meaning that cannot be figured out from the meaning of the words in it (such as up in the air for "undecided")
figurative not literal, expressing one thing in terms normally used for another
literal limited to the explicit meaning of a word or text
diction the manner in which something is expressed in words
denotation the most direct or specific meaning of a word or expression
connotation something suggested by a word or thing, the feeling given by a word
slang informal language consisting of words and expressions that are not considered appropriate for formal occasions
pronunciation the way a word sounds when it is spoken out loud
usage the customary manner in which a word is spoken or written
analysis the way you understand something by looking at it in different ways and studying its different parts
part of speech one of the traditional categories of words (nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc)
context the background, environment, setting, framework, or surroundings of events or occurrences
shades of meaning the small, subtle differences between words
root the form of a word after all prefixes and suffixes are removed
