rhyme repetition of sounds at the end of words
end rhyme rhyme that occurs at the end of lines
rhythm pattern or flow of sound created by the arrangement of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line of poetry
stanza a poetic paragraph
persona refers to the narrator
alliteration repetition of initial consonant sounds
assonance repetition of vowel sound within non-rhyming words
imagery descriptive words and phrases that recreate sensory experiences for the reader (appeals to one or more of the five senses--sight, hearing, smell, taste or touch)
metaphor makes a comparison between two things that are basically unlike but that has something in common (doesn't use like or as)
onomatopoeia words that imitate sounds
personification giving human traits to a nonhuman or abstract thing
simile compares two unlike things using the words "like" or "as"
hyberbole exaggeration for effect
