Ecosystems

Use this stack to help you prepare for the ecosystems test

QuestionAnswer
What is a consumer? An organism that gets their energy from eating other animals.
What is an ecosystem? All the living and nonliving things in an environment and how they interact with eachother.
What is a producer? A living thing that makes its own food. It is always a plant.
What is a food web? A group of food chains within an ecosystem.
What is an organism? The term used to describe any living thing.
What is a food chain? The transfer of energy from one organism to another. It is grouped into producers, consumers/predators, and decomposers.
What are microplastics? Tiny plastic particles that are harming ocean food chains and webs.
What are invasive species? Plants and animals that become part of an ecosystem that they are not naturally found in.
What is a decomposer? A living thing that breaks down dead plants, animals, or waste. They can come into the food chain at any time.
What is at the start of every food chain and web? the sun
What are some examples of decomposers? bacteria, earthworms, fungi (mushrooms)
What can happen if a top consumer/predator is eliminated from a food chain or web? The things that these animals eat can overpopulate.
What can happen if a producer or bottom level consumer gets eliminated from a food chain or web? The animals in the food chain or web can run out of food to eat.
