S6 1.2 MeasMatter
Science 6 Measuring Matter
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| mass | the amount of matter in an object |
| matter | anything that has mass and takes up space |
| volume | the amount of space that matter occupies |
| weight | the force of gravity on an object |
| weight on the Moon | 1/6 of what you weigh on Earth |
| weight on Jupiter | more than 2 times more than what you weigh on Earth |
| triple-beam balance scale | a tool for measuring mass |
| mass vs. weight | mass does not change, but weight changes depending on the gravity |
| how to calculate the volume of a regular shaped object | length x width x height |
| how to calculate the volume of irregular shaped object | measure the volume of a liquid, then put the irregular object in the liquid and measure the increase in water level (displacement) |
| density | the mass of a material in a given volume |
| how to calculate density | mass divided by volume |
| the density of water | 1 gram per cubic centimeter |
| effect of increasing temperature on density | it decreases density |
| effect of decreasing temperature on density | it increases density |
