CHECKPOINT #1

FORCES

TermDefinition
What is a Force? Is any push or pull on an object.
What is Balanced Force? When all the forces acting upon an object are equal and opposite. The object won't move or will keep a constant acceleration.
What is Unbalanced Force? When all forces acting on an object are not equal and opposite. The object will show a change in speed, direction, or both.
What is Magnetic force? A push or pull on an object through attractive or repulsive forces. Non-Contact Force. Affected by distance of objects.
What is Electrical force? A push or pull between any two charged objects. Non-Contact Force. Affected by distance of objects.
What is Frictional Force? A force that opposes the direction of motion. Contact Force.
What is Net Force? This is the sum of all forces acting on an object.
What does it mean that the Net Force is 0 Newtons (N)? It means that forces are balanced.
What does it mean that the Net Force is greater than 0 Newtons (N)? It means that forces are unbalanced.
What do you do calculate the net forces IF arrows are going in the same direction? You add them to calculate the net force.
What do you do calculate the net forces IF arrows are going in opposite direction? You subtract them to calculate the net force.
What is Contact forces? Forces between objects which are touching each other.
What is Non-Contact forces? Forces which act over a distance; they do not have to be touching.
What is Gravity Force? It is what pulls objects toward the center of Earth and holds them on the surface. Non-contact Force.
What is Normal Force? Force that pushes back on an object when it is in contact with each other. Contact Force. Opposes to Gravity.
What is Applied Force? Force exerted on an object by another object or a person through direct physical contact.
What is Mass? Amount of matter in an object. Doesn't change with location. Measured in Kilograms.
What is Weight? Affected by gravity. it changes with location. Measured in Newtons (N).
What factors impact/affect Gravity? Affected by mass and distance. The closer and bigger the objects the stronger this force is.
Name 3 types of non-contact forces. gravitational, magnetic, electrical
Which measurement describes how much stuff is in an object? Mass
Which measurement describes how much gravity is pulling on an object? Weight
What happens to your weight if you change planets? It goes up or down based on the mass and gravity of the planet you are on.
Gravity ______________ with bigger mass. Increases
Gravity ______________ with longer distances. Decreases
++ and -- (like) charges will _____________ each other repel
opposite charges _______________ each other attract
What two things impact electric force? amount of charge and distance
Two magnets will repel when like poles are together
Two magnets will attract each other when opposite poles are together
What is a Scientific Theory? It EXPLAINS how things happen and is supported by lots of evidence. It can be improved. Example: Atomic theory, Evolution theory.
What is a Scientific Law? It DESCRIBES natural events and is supported by lots of evidence. Example: Law of Universal Gravitation

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
