FORCES

TermDefinition
Force A force is any push or pull on an object.
Balanced Force When all the forces acting upon an object are equal and opposite. The object won't move or will keep a constant acceleration.
Unbalanced Force When all forces acting on an object are not equal and opposite. The object will show a change in speed, direction, or both.
Magnetic force A push or pull on an object through attractive or repulsive forces. Non-Contact Force. Affected by distance of objects.
Electrical force A push or pull between any two charged objects. Non-Contact Force. Affected by distance of objects.
Frictional Force A force that opposes the direction of motion. Contact Force.
Net Force The net force is the sum of all forces acting on an object.
Net Force of 0 Newtons means... Forces are balanced.
Net Force greater than 0 Newtons means... Forces are unbalanced.
Forces going in the same direction ... You add them to calculate the net force.
Forces going in opposite direction ... You subtract them to calculate the net force.
Contact forces Forces between objects which are touching each other.
Non-Contact forces Forces which act over a distance; they do not have to be touching.
Gravity Force Gravity is what pulls objects toward the center of Earth and holds them on the surface. Non-contact Force. Affected by mass and distance. The closer and bigger the objects the stronger the gravity.
Normal Force Force that pushes back on an object when it is in contact with each other. Contact Force. Opposes to Gravity.
Applied Force Force exerted on an object by another object or a person through direct physical contact.
Mass Amount of matter in an object. Doesn't change with location. Measured in Kilograms.
Weight Affected by gravity. it changes with location. Measured in Newtons (N).

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
